Mifi, a hotspot in your pocket.
Alright gadget techies, I am interesting in getting a Mifi but I'm still doing my homework on which one is the best for the money. Right now I'm looking at Virgin Mobile's Mifi.
Broadband2Go | Virgin Mobile USA
From what I read, I get unlimited data at $40/month.
Also, I'm curious as to whether or not an itouch/iphone + Mifi + Skype would be a better alternative than a regular contract with AT&T and their data plans.
Skype: $3 to $6 per month
Virgin Mobile's Mifi: $40 per month
Total: about $46 per month with unlimited data plan
Correct me if I'm wrong about the pricing but so far this sounds like a steal.
Give input!

But I'm not with sprint, how would I get the device for free without buying a contract with them?

Nah you dont need sprint.. if you have an andriod.. some of them can be a hotspot if you root your phone and put your own ROM on the phone :P

I hacked my droid so I can have my wifi hot spot anywhere I go for free. Lol. Wonder how long it will last.

The rooted android can be a wifi hot spot running on it's 3g, on the sprint network? Also is this the HTC EVO 4g were talking about?
EDIT: Did a Google search and the HTC EVO can get rooted.

Yup. With specific ROMs you can find, there is a wifi hotspot software included and it only works if you have root access to your phone. Otherwise you can add it to your custom ROM you find, you just gotta look. The pros to having it rooted with a custom ROM would be that the phone runs faster, can get overclocked, and it has most of the useless programs removed so you have more space

What do you mean by "wonder how long it will last"? I'm looking for something that will last for a couple of years at least. I'm still a little skeptical about buying and rooting the HTC EVO 4g Android and use that as my mifi over the Virgin Mobile 2200 mifi.
@ Savor, Loki
Just to clear things up. I can go to my local Best Buy and buy the HTC EVO with out a sprint contract, hack the android, and use it's 3g for free with out actually being with Spring? I searched on Youtube about this but there were no videos talking about free 3g internet for the droid, only videos about free tethering. That sounded like they were with Sprint in some form or fashion and they just turned the Android into a tether device that was connected to there already made Sprint plan.
Thanks in advance!

That's actually a good idea Lights. I don't know if it works though. If it does work I'm going to be jealous lol. Shoulda thought of that.

You need service with the company to use the 3G. All you would need is the data plan.. which isn't that bad considering that what you want to do requires an EXTRA charge for internet while your phone can already provide that for you.

Sprint - Cell phone rate plans, nextel plans, wireless phone services
All the plans there are more costly than the Virgin Mobile 2200 data per month, If I'm not mistaken.

Unless you mean I can choose the Basic Plan, $29.99 per month (just the minutes, no data plan included) and Rooting will unlock the free data plan?
