SC2 Snipers Revisited
Okay, I've been thinking of a new idea for SC2 Snipers and if we want to bring Snipers (back?) to SC2, (we?) have to do various things:
- Accept the fact that there is so much potential to create a better Snipers and Snipers Community with Galaxy Edit.
- Create a well thought out plan for map that many people will play.
- Create the map
If you think this sounds like bullshit then give a reason why.
The way I view snipers from the perspective of others is that it's too simple. But what if we make a map that's simple and involves a lot of underlying strategy/mechanics? It's either we attract more people or have another idea lost for a cause. If we just stick to the same point-and-lock shit, it gets boring on SC2 considering that we can manipulate physics now. It's different from SC1 because we can't NL, SHS, and HS and that's what I think makes SC1 Snipers still fun.
Since I will have a lot of down time in few days(finals are over next week), I'll be putting ideas on Notepad and eventually get to creating a new Snipers map for SC2(after I get to learning Galaxy Edit). Balance shouldn't be an issue.
My ideas thus far:
I. Gameplay
-Similar CTF style we've been used to.(Still thinking of ways it can improve/be adjusted to SC2 standards.)
-Nearly same Right-Click/A-Move/Trail and Lock gameplay we've been used to.
-Ability to dodge bullets(it's possible and plausible; a player can dodge Marauder/Hydralisk/Stalker/Banshee shots with a Stalker's blink if timed correctly).
-Save Sniper character with 3 save slots. Currently, my idea stands at loading the Sniper at the start of the game.
-Computer to gain gold/experience from.
II. Mechanics
-Different Sniper abilities to create diverse styles of play using different unit abilities and the ability to customize your sniper. Currently we lack styles of play on BW. The only play styles I can think of are: greeders, sitters, cliffers, glitchers.
-Experience/Money system for more micro intensive abilities; the only problem I see with this is separating the noobs from the pros, but I am sure there will be a viable way to balance this.
-An in-game store to purchase abilities/items.
-Original Sniper mode w/ Blink ability.
III. Customization
-Change sniper skins/unit/contrast(?), weapon, projectile animation, abilities, etc. Currently, I find it a fun/interesting concept if you can change your Sniper skin during the course of the game.
These are ideas of course, but it still can happen. I don't know about WC3 snipers, but I'm pretty sure this would be more successful. Sure, it sounds like it heavily deviates from the original concept, but the only way to prove that it's still on the same level as the original snipers is to put it to the test, so give your two-cents and what-not.
I will add more detail of the gameplay later/soon.
My proof that SC2 Snipers can be a success:
I've never played the following map, but if it was good enough to win Blizzard's Custom Map contest.. then hell, Snipers would blow this shit out of the water.
MAD

This map is pretty fun and further shows how much customization we can do.
Raynor's Party

Runling Run
No video, but it was one of the first games I found that can save a customizable unit.
Just to showcase how much power Galaxy Edit has over the game.

Simple is why SC Brood War is Fun, the more in depth and complicated u make games, the less smooth the game play becomes.
Snipers should not xfer over to sc2, it should remain a brood war game, or die.
I bet u can lazer tag or some other gay wanna be pro map on sc2 if u really wanted something that was 'similar' to snipers.
"brilliance in the basics"

Might as well let it die, then. Or keep it so underground only a handful of people play. One of two things can happen: Blizzard gets rid of popularity system and snipers may have a chance at coming back or snipers will phase out. Like I said my idea sounds completely different, but to play on it would be similiar to the original Snipers.

Maybe, but I still enjoy brood wars, on the OLD system with the OLD graphics.

I don't think leveling up would be good. If you can save it you will always have a huge advantage over people starting. Maybe save preferences, and in the beginning people can choose 'perks.' Abilities might ruin it. For example, a scanner sweep would ruin the ability to hold a position via pillars or good cover. The abilities could be little things though, like (if possible) increase the sight range for like 3 seconds or something similar to stimpack that lasts 3 seconds. Everyone would be able to choose a variety of their own perks at the beginning to match their playing style

cloak for 1 second, that way ur enemy Missclicks....
this works cause when they flag turrets will reveal them still

I have absolutely lost interest in SC2 Snipers. The popularity system has failed the sniper community on SC2. It's done. I'd just give it up. Like Ora said, the simplicity of BW Snipers is why it's so fun. The mechanics in SC2 are just not fit for snipers.

They are trying to implement chatrooms. Never give up, never surrender!

About time, Just need to fix the popularity system for custom maps and snipers could actually be played...
Still need to figure out NL's and a couple other things but at least were getting somewhere...

I like how they implemented the chat channels. They didn't revert it back to how we used to do it in the previous games, but they put it in one of those little windows that we're so accustomed to now XD

So useless though... I can imagine the spam you get in games now =.=

I say good luck. It takes time learning the editor, especially if you haven't had experience using the WC3 editor.
This map does not only need a make-over, but it also needs a new player base. Most of the players on here complain about changes and don't want the game to evolve.. they want to keep it boring.
I was pro- going for adding new features and stuff.. but one thing that will take away from the game is "items".. stay away from that.

Theres already a map made and Mav was doing good with learning on how to do things, If theres channels and clans again...people will play it..
The problem was nobody could find anyone and since the game was so far down the popularity it was never played.

There was a map made before Mav even made his.. a simplistic game we are used to on a simple game is not going to work on a game that can be extremely dynamic. Hardly anyone will like that system and would want more. That is the point.
